So You Think You Can Dance 5/27/09 Recap
Tonight’s episode was the season premiere part II. The judges were in Memphis and Miami. The guest judges were Tyce Diorio (in Miami) and Little C (in Memphis). Here’s a quick run down of the good and bad (names may be spelled wrong, I apologize!):
The Bad
The first contestant is Tony and his style is the “Tony” style. Once he says this you know it’s gonna be bad. For his audition he dances to “Footloose” and flails around the stage. The judges humor him and tell him he’s like “the quirky dancer” you see in the background in movies. By the end he’s so exhausted that he needs a medic.
Then we meet Jennifer and Jessica Guatic. Twins from Miami. Cat says they’re “telepathically connected” or something like that. They look gothic and new agey. They supposedly trained themselves through books or something. Yeah, they’re bad. ” They’re “supposed” to be in sync the whole time but they. totally. aren’t.
There’s also a guy who’s the cousin of Howie D. from the Backstreet Boys. He wears a red headband and reminds me of a young Richard Simmons with straight hair. He dances hip-hop to Lady Gaga and it’s super cheesy!
I’ll move to the good now, since that’s always more interesting (for me anyway)!
The Pretty Good and the Good/People to Watch
The first good audition is Priscilla from Miami. She dances choreography and Tyce Diorio basically makes sex noises as she dances. She tells the judges she had an injury when she was 15 and then decided she would be a “normal person” for a little while (because apparently dancers aren’t “normal people”). Anyway, she’s good, a possible top 20 contender.
Eric “Silky” Moore. He’s a tapper and he’s upset that all the dance shows focus on styles other dance styles but never tap. His goal is to “bring tap back.” He’s pretty good! He dances to “Thriller.” He does a moonwalk in tap shoes and it looks pretty cool. He also does a few “worms” and even some “reverse worms” (on his back) and they look cool too. Another possible top-20er? He makes it to Vegas.
Talia Rickards. She married when she was 18 but her husband died four years later in a motorcycle accident. Maybe she’s the SYTYCD version of Danny Gokey? She does a hip-hop routine but it’s underwhelming. The judges put her through to the choreography round. She makes it to Vegas but I doubt she’ll make it further.
Marico. He’s a cop from Memphis. He does a style called “Memphis juking.” It requires crazy intricate footwork.
Caitlin Kinney. She’s only been dancing for five years but she was a gymnast before she she was a dancer. She’s also had hip reconstruction. Wouldn’t be surprised to see her in the top 20.
Anna Dunn. Her father killed himself and she uses dancing as an outlet. She’s a good dancer but according to the judges she throws her head around too much.
Evan and Ryan Kasprzak (brothers). They both do old-timey, broadway type dances. Evan previously made it to the top 40 last year. I could definitely see him in the top 20 this year — he’s got that outgoing personality the judges look for. His brother Ryan does a tap routine with a whoopie cusion — yes, a whoopie cushion. He’s good too and makes it to Vegas.
Ok, that’s just a brief overview of Miami and Memphis. Tomorrow it’s on to L.A. and Seattle!
