Facts about The Who and The Who Tours

  • In the 1960s, The Who’s Peter Townshend was the first rock artist to smash his guitar.  He smashed his first guitar in 1964 at the Railway Tavern in Harrow and Wealdstone, England.  He destroyed the guitar after he’d accidentally broke it threw the ceiling.  This prompted snickers from the crowd, which angered Townsend, causing him to destroy the guitar to pieces.  This guitar smashing act subsequently became a staple of The Who’s tours for the next few years.
  • Keith Moon (The Who’s drummer) was also known for destroying his drum set.  In fact, during The Who’s first U.S. t.v. appearance, Moon overloaded his bass drum with explosive charges that detonated during the song, “My Generation.”
  • During The Who’s U.S. tour for their album Quadrophenia, drummer Keith Moon passed out twice due to tranquilizers during a concert in San Francisco.  Once Moon was totally unconscious, Pete Townshend asked the crowd if anyone could play the drums well.  Audience member Scot Halpin said he could and he filled in for the rest of the concert.
